Winter in Zhangjiajie: layering, ice grips and cableway closures

Mountain temperatures run 5—8 °C below the city and steps ice over. A three-layer clothing system, traction devices and backup plans for temporary closures.

The first sunny day after snow brings both the best rime and the most accidents — that is exactly the day for crampons and an early descent.

The three-layer system

Summits run 5—8 °C below the city, colder still in the wind. Use wicking base + insulating mid-layer + windproof shell:

  • Base: merino or fast-dry fabric — cotton stays wet and chills you fast.
  • Mid: fleece or a light down piece you can stash while climbing.
  • Shell: wind- and rainproof; sleet is common and umbrellas are useless in valley wind.

Do not skip accessories: hat, gloves, neck gaiter, and gloves warm enough to grip poles. Kids feel the cold first — keep a spare dry base layer in the car.

Traction, poles and shoes

From December to February, shaded steps and boardwalks ice over in the morning. Simple four-point crampons stretch over trainers and cost around ¥20—40 in park shops; take them off on city streets, where the spikes slip.

  • Lug-soled hiking or trail shoes; flat snow boots slide.
  • Poles save your knees going down; rentals are available in the park.
  • On ice: short steps, flat feet, weight slightly forward — no running.

When the cableway stops

Wind, snow and ice shut the cableways and the Bailong lift several times each winter. Plan for it:

  • Put cableway sights on the morning of day one so you can reschedule.
  • Watch the park's official WeChat notices — closures usually post 1—2 hours ahead.
  • Keep indoor backups: Huanglong Cave and Baofeng Lake barely notice the weather, and the Zhangjiajie Romance show runs regardless.

Winter safety notes

  • Stay on open walkways; after snow, hidden ice and holes make shortcuts dangerous.
  • Sunset is around 17:30 and the mountains go dark earlier — start down by 16:00.
  • Carry hot water; some park vendors shorten hours in winter.
  • Cold drains batteries: keep phones and spares inside your jacket.
