For weekends and first visits: Yuanjiajie, Golden Whip Stream and Tianzi Mountain, 8—10 km walking per day.
The most popular combination, adding Tianmen Mountain and Xibu Street to the core parks.
All three Wulingyuan zones plus the Glass Bridge, Huanglong Cave and Baofeng Lake at a relaxed pace.
Stay in Wulingyuan district near Xibu Street, within walking distance of the park gate and restaurants.
Enter at 07:30 and walk 5 km of Golden Whip Stream (2.5 hrs). After lunch, take a shuttle to the Bailong Elevator, ride up to Yuanjiajie and visit the First Bridge Under Heaven, Mihun Terrace and the Qiankun Column. Descend by cable car or elevator in the evening.
Highlight: Cloud seas are common after lunch; Mihun Terrace faces the sunset.
Take the first shuttle up to Tianzi Mountain for Imperial Brush Peaks, Fairy Maid Scattering Flowers and the West Sea stone forest. Descend and walk or ride the train through Ten-Mile Gallery. Leave the park around 15:00, allowing two hours to reach the airport or station.
Highlight: Sunrise at Tianzi Mountain and backlit peaks in the gallery.
Stay night 1 in Yongding district near the Tianmen cableway; nights 2—3 in Wulingyuan.
Queue at the lower cableway station by 08:00. Walk the Ghost Valley and glass walkways, then descend to Tianmen Cave Plaza and tackle the 999 steps (or use the escalator). Come down before 17:00; the Tianmen Fox Fairy show is an evening option.
Early transfer to the Forest Park gate, up by Bailong Elevator to Yuanjiajie, then shuttle via Yangjiajie (Wulong Fort, Tianbo Mansion) to Tianzi Mountain. Sleep in Tianzishan town or return to Wulingyuan.
An easy morning along Golden Whip Stream, the gallery after lunch, then dinner and souvenir shopping (vine tea, cured meats) on Xibu Street before departure.
Three nights in Wulingyuan plus one in the city keeps luggage moves to a minimum.
Check in downtown, visit Dayong Ancient Town or the Tujia Folk Customs Park, collect tickets and check the next day's forecast.
Cableway, glass walkway, Sandstone peaks and cloud sea at Tianmen Mountain, Zhangjiajie — 6—7 hours in total.
Bailong Elevator up, Yuanjiajie loop plus Wulong Fort in Yangjiajie; overnight in Wulingyuan.
Descend after sunrise, then the gentle valleys in the afternoon and Xibu Street at night.
Bridge in the morning, one cave or lake in the afternoon, then head to the airport or station after 17:00.
Pick one theme and layer it onto the day-count framework above.
Sleep on the plateau once; bring a tripod and polariser.
Skip glass walkways and the 999 steps; pack insect repellent and spare clothes.
Some routes require registration — go in groups and carry offline maps.
High negative-ion counts make three slow days genuinely restorative.
