Where to stay and what to eat

Four stay areas compared with price ranges, plus a must-eat list: Tujia three-pot stew, rock-ear chicken soup, cured meats, rice tofu, kudzu starch and Zhangjiajie vine tea.

Where to Stay

Four areas, one simple rule

Choose the area closest to the gate you will use most: Wulingyuan district for the national park, Yongding district for Tianmen Mountain.

Top pick

Wulingyuan district (Xibu Street)

Closest to the Wulingyuan park gate — walk or ride five minutes to enter. Dining, night markets, hostels and upscale hotels are all concentrated here.

Best for: 2—5 day trips, families.

¥150—¥800 / night
Transport hub

Yongding district (city)

Next to Hehua Airport, Zhangjiajie West station and the Zhangjiajie peak forest above the cloud sea base, with Dayong Ancient Town within walking distance.

Best for: Tianmen focus, late arrivals.

¥120—¥600 / night
For photographers

Tianzishan town / on the plateau

Sleeping inside or above the park makes sunrise and sunset easy and removes the commute; expect fewer dining options and awkward luggage handling.

Best for: photography, repeat visitors.

¥200—¥700 / night
Quiet

Forest Park gate area

Near the Golden Whip Stream entrance and the Huangshizhai cableway: very quiet with excellent air, ideal for first-entry mornings, though services are limited.

Best for: hiking, slow travel.

Local Food

What to eat in Zhangjiajie

Tujia, Miao and Bai influences meet here: sour, spicy, smoky, with cured meats, mountain fungi and river produce at the centre.

Tujia Three-Pot Stew (San Xia Guo)

The signature dish: cured pork, tofu and radish or dried bamboo simmered together, served dry or in broth. Found in both the city and Wulingyuan.

Pairs well with corn rice and local rice wine.

Rock Ear Chicken Soup

Slow-simmered free-range chicken with rock ear fungus harvested from sandstone cliffs — clear, savoury and mildly restorative after a long day on the trails.

Good for seniors and children.

Tujia Cured Pork & Mixed Cured Platter

Pine-smoked bacon with a deep reddish gloss, best steamed with dried bamboo shoots or fern. It is also the most popular edible souvenir.

Buy from licensed shops with inspection labels.

Rice Tofu & Pickled Radish

Silky rice tofu with a hot-sour dressing and crunchy pickled radish — the classic street snack combination on Xibu Street and in night markets.

Around ¥8—¥20 per serving.

Kudzu Starch & Fern Root Cakes

Mountain root starches served soft and mildly sweet, as breakfast or dessert, and widely sold in dried form to take home.

Souvenir boxes roughly ¥30—¥80.

Zhangjiajie Vine Tea (Ampelopsis)

A protected local specialty: the brewed tea forms a white frost on the surface with a distinctly sweet finish — the region's most popular gift in recent years.

Check origin labelling and grade.

Food Streets

Where to eat and wander at night

Xibu Street (Wulingyuan)

The main pedestrian street in Wulingyuan, packed with three-pot stew restaurants, barbecue, bars and Tujia handicrafts, with folk performances in the evening — a ten-minute walk from the park gate.

Dayong Ancient Town (city)

A night-time cultural block built in Tujia architectural style; ideal for your arrival evening, with light shows and live performance.

Nanmenkou Food Street

A local snack street in the city with honest prices — rice tofu, pickled radish and fried cakes are the things to try.

Inside the parks

Viewpoint areas such as Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain have simple canteens and hot water points at higher prices; carry your own snacks and water.

Food safety: Never forage wild mushrooms or plants yourself; choose licensed restaurants for river and seafood dishes; if you are sensitive to spice, ask for “wei la” (mild) or “bu la” (no chilli).
